The term
“statement piece” gets thrown around a lot in fashion, and is more often than not a nod to
 anything involving stark prints, eye-punching hues or busy
embellishment (or all three if things get 
really serious).
The mere
mention of such a concept will thus – and quite rightly – be likely to send
anyone devoted 
to a minimal, classic code of dressing running full pelt for the
hills.
We all
knew that sneaker obsession had to come in handy at some point.
Let me
quell those fears though my friends, for I am here to challenge the traditional
notion of 
statement wear in favour of one that better suits those of us with a
less-is-more approach to dressing – 
the concept of the subtle statement piece.
How can
a statement piece, by definition, be subtle? It’s all in the details. Dramatic silhouettes, edgy 
detailing, contrasting textures, bold metal embellishment –
any of these features can contribute 
greatly to the statement-making quality of
a piece, whilst maintaining that air of subtlety and 
effortlessness so many of
us crave.
Often
the easiest way to spot a subtle statement piece is to seek out those classic
wardrobe staples that 
designers have put their own unique spin on. The white
shirt, the black pant, the leather jacket, the white 
sneaker, the boyfriend
blazer, the black leather bag, the blue denim jean – all these items we know
and 
love can suddenly become pretty damn cool with a little directional
thinking from the right designer.
Think
Vetements, Ellery, Margiela, Wang… these
designers aren’t exactly reinventing the wheel when 
it comes to their
collections, it’s all about how they work those familiar wardrobe classics in new and 
exciting ways that piques our interest and has us almost convincing
ourselves that $2000 isn’t actually 
an outrageous price to pay for a pair of
cut-up jeans (looking at you, Demna).
But I
digress.
My point
here is that those of us with a more subtle style sensibility need not shy away
from the concept 
of the statement piece, we just need to re-route our thinking
a little to find what works for us.
Here I
am wearing my favourite statement piece of the moment, this stunning shirt by Australian label 
Strateas
Carlucci, now available on Farfetch. With its man-style cut and overlong sleeves, it definitely 
makes
an impact whilst still being clean and effortless – a true win for my
minimalist tendencies. Paired 
with a tailored Ellery
cropped flare, Celine-esque chunky white sneaker, classic
round Ray-Bans and 
my much-treasured Gucci
Dionysus bag, it makes for a simple yet edgy outfit that makes a statement 
without being too loud or garish. 
Once again, a
win for the minimalists amongst us.
So don’t
let the idea of the statement piece overwhelm you  – instead, embrace the subtle side and get 
all the impact without the compromise on classic styling.
Now
that’s a statement worth making.
