THE QUESTION OF COLOUR.

Because not everything in life is always so black and white..

The question of colour has been playing on my mind of late. How does one reconcile an unwavering devotion to classic, minimal and largely monochromatic dressing with an increasing urge to don oneself in a full(er) spectrum of hues? Are the two entirely incompatible?

Up until recently the idea of colour in fashion, and indeed the bleed out into the street style circuit, has been a true all or nothing approach; if colour was to be worn, it would be done so with full gusto. Think bold shades, mixed and matched to the wearer’s content in often layered and voluminous abundance, rarely pared back with accessories that were any more subdued. In other words: if you wore colour, you wore colour, and let no black, white or grey be seen to suggest otherwise. This subsequent association of colour with such fashionable eccentricity logically meant those of us who preferred a more understated approach steered well clear, uncertain how to incorporate it whilst still feeling properly like ourselves.

Fast forward a few years and, thankfully, it seems the tides have turned.. Thanks to ever-reliable pioneers like Céline, Joseph, Acne Studios and even Balenciaga to a degree, the concept of colour has been redefined to the delight of classic minimalists everywhere. Subtle pastel hues and barely-there burgundies and bottle greens have increasingly worked their way onto runways over recent seasons, with a particular focus on tonal tailoring.

Case in point: this Ellery suit I’m sporting – a shining example of how keeping things simple can take almost head-to-toe colour from kitsch to cool in an instant. Consider this my answer to that colourful question, my friends: think sleek, think minimal, think tonal and clean-cut, and you really can’t go wrong.
